Higgins Group, Pinnacle and PRP have achieved a Highly Commended in Housing Project of the Year for Oval Quarter, Myatts Field North in Lambeth.

The award, which was open to housebuilders, housing providers and developers, judged the best housing projects in the past year, for large developments of at least 15 units.

Paul Cooke, New Business Director for Higgins Construction comments, “We are delighted to receive another award for Myatts Field North. Our flagship development is one of the last to be delivered through a PFI and has seen a dramatic transformation of what was traditionally a heavily-stigmatised, underprivileged estate into a vibrant new neighbourhood with high quality homes and facilities for the community.”

The Building Awards celebrates the best in UK construction and is the industry’s longest running and biggest event of the year, covering all aspects of building in its 23 categories.

The judges commented “Oval Quarter remodels the Myatts Field North 1970s housing estate in south London, into a new urban village and vibrant inner-city quarter. The scheme delivers 808 mixed (50/50 balance) tenure homes (social, shared ownership and for sale) and 172 refurbished properties. The project is an exemplar for how to deliver genuine regeneration and retain a socially mixed community.”

Myatts Field North was delivered through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between LB Lambeth and Regenter Consortium which consists of Higgins Group plc, Pinnacle Group, Notting Hill Housing Group and the design team led by PRP.

Myatts Field North has created 808 new mixed tenure (social, shared ownership and private sale) homes and 172 refurbished properties. This is alongside a brand new multi-storey community centre housed underneath a new landscaped park with its sloping roof forming part of the new public space, new public realm, new retail provision and a neighbourhood combine heating and power system.

The consortium team worked closely with the community throughout all stages of development to ensure the estate was unified with the surrounding area and that the design of the scheme struck a balance between contemporary and traditional building forms and patterns.

It also provided a series of positive social and economic outcomes for residents providing life chances by building confidence, capacity and skills with access to training and employment activities. The new community centre has also become a focus for neighbourhood activities supporting and promoting stronger bonds between new and existing residents, fostering community identity and instilling pride in the community for all residents.

The Winterslow Community Allotments is a result of the consultation throughout the project and allows residents to grow and produce food, exercise and socialise. Children’s groups use them to promote healthy eating and the social enterprise café grows herbs and vegetables for use in the food it serves.

Myatts Field North (Oval Quarter) is a prime example of a successful regeneration project offering exemplary quality housing, knitted together with exciting new public realm and a new green heart.
