William Tyndale Primary School put their enterprise skills to the test at The Colville Estate

Students from William Tyndale Primary School in Islington recently spent the day with Higgins Construction at the Colville Estate as part of their work with Enabling Enterprise. The visit, which was supported by volunteers from Higgins’ partner companies, Wates Construction and Anthology, included a tour of the site and a close up walk inside the site itself.

This was followed by students being set the challenge of redesigning a brownfield site for the people of the fictional town of Bogsby. Divided into teams, they had to research the wants and needs of different people in the community and apply their understanding by choosing buildings and areas that would be suitable for everyone. Students captured their ideas by designing a plan for the Bogsby development.

“It was fantastic for the children to visit a construction site and this fitted in very well with the Brilliant Builds challenge,” said a teacher at William Tyndale Primary School.

The teams also thought carefully about the needs and wants of the Bogsby community as well as sustainability issues like recycling and green energy. To get the plans finished in time, students needed to show excellent ‘Working in a Team’ and ‘Leading skills’ before sharing ideas with the judges in the final presentations they delivered in front of a judging panel, made up of the volunteers from Higgins, Wates and Anthology.

Sarah Clark, Senior Resident Liaison Officer for Higgins Construction comments, “It was a really enjoyable session and it was great to see the teams really thinking about and responding to the needs of the community.”

“The best bit of the day was when we worked as a team to design our development,” said a student at William Tyndale Primary School.

Enabling Enterprise works in partnership with schools and employers to bring the world of work into classrooms through lesson-time projects and challenge days. The trips are an invaluable way of broadening children’s aspirations and making the connection between classroom learning and real life.
