Higgins has completed the ` for Meyer Homes at Gabriel Square in the heart of St Albans, Hertfordshire.
The £46.5 million scheme, which won a Sunday Times Home of the Year Award, features townhouses and apartments designed to reflect the very best of the architectural styles from Georgian, Regency and Victorian London. The homes are built around a stunning central landscaped garden square courtyard, featuring a world class sculpture created by David Harber.
To ensure the development is car free, secure private underground parking was also built beneath the courtyard. The homes include 52 townhouses ranging from three to five bedrooms, 16 two and three bedroom maisonettes and 12 one and two bedroom apartments.
Steve Leakey, Managing Director of Higgins Construction comments, “We are extremely proud of the work we have been carried out at Gabriel Square. Built on the former Evershed’s print works, the site was a challenge from the start with the existing site being bowl shape which required excavation to regularize the lower ground floor and allow near-level pedestrian access across the podium from all sides. It also included work to part demolish and rebuild one family home on Alma Road.
“Throughout the project, we have also worked closely with local schools and colleges to promote the construction industry and provide career advice and mentoring as well as employing three management trainees and three apprentices on site. We also created a viewing platform for the neighbouring nursery to allow the children to watch the work and see the development come to life.
“We also ensured the local community and businesses were supported by introducing a regular prize draw for staff and subcontractors against local business receipts and raised money and awareness for local foodbanks and charities. We are delighted with the final scheme which has already won a number of awards.”
Gabriel Square complements the stunning architecture of St Albans whilst at the same time adopting a minimalist perspective. Traditional materials such as natural French limestone has also been used to add a sense of lineage to the contemporary form. Higgins’ skills and expertise in working with bespoke materials has also ensured a smooth delivery of the architect’s vision.
