Higgins Group plc signs Building Mental Health Charter

Posted: 11/10/2019

On World Mental Health Day, Higgins Group plc has signed the Building Mental Health Charter to demonstrate its continued commitment to raising awareness of the mental health issues faced within the construction industry.

Every working day two construction workers take their own life and stress, anxiety and depression currently account for a fifth of work-related illness.

Building Mental Health’s aims to encourage the industry to engage and embrace the mental health agenda, make best practice and information readily available and ensure the industry takes a huge leap forward to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health by getting the conversation started.

Richard Higgins, Chairman of Higgins Group plc comments, “At Higgins we take the wellbeing of our staff very seriously, so we are delighted to have signed the charter to commit to continuing to raise awareness. As an industry we must work together to recognise the signs and symptoms of our colleagues who may be suffering and encourage people that it is good to talk.

“As well as the Charter, we also work with other important organisations to promote positive mental health such as Mates in Mind and every member of our team has access to a mental health app set up by the Construction Industry Helpline and managed by the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity.”

The mental health app provides vital information, advice and guidance on many wellbeing topics and is aimed at people who would like to find out more about how they can help themselves or if necessary, take the next step to seeking professional help.
