Higgins Partnerships Supports Future Construction Talent Through Inspiring Education Programmes

Higgins Partnerships is proud to be supporting students and local adults in developing skills for life and sparking interest in careers within the construction industry through a range of recent educational initiatives.
Earlier this month, we were delighted to participate in Millfields Primary School’s World of Work (WOW) Week in Hackney. Our team led a fun and interactive workshop for Year 2 students, teaching them about the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) through an engaging video and discussion. The session concluded with students trying on real PPE gear - an experience that proved a major highlight for the budding young builders!
This inspiring session formed part of a wider programme organised by Inspire Education Business Partnership, who, alongside two exchange student interns from the USA, delivered hands-on bricklaying workshops using foam bricks and educational worksheets. These activities helped ignite early interest in construction and showcased the valuable skills the industry can offer.
We also recently joined our partners, Construction Youth Trust, at Oasis Academy South Bank for an interactive and engaging session with Year 13 students. The students were tasked with helping a company save £60,000, working in teams over three rounds, each with new information, testing their ability to problem-solve, collaborate, and think strategically.
As judges, our team assessed the students’ key skills, including:
· Teamwork
· Listening
· Speaking
· Leadership
It was fantastic to see the students step up, take charge, and develop the skills that are so essential in the workplace. Huge thanks to Construction Youth Trust and Oasis Academy South Bank for hosting such a valuable session!
Continuing our commitment to nurturing future talent, earlier this month, Melissa from our Social Value team attended Lewisham College’s Carousel Day. She spent time with small groups of students, sharing her career journey within the construction sector and discussing apprenticeship and work experience opportunities available with Higgins Partnerships, particularly at our Deptford Landings development.
Students were full of insightful questions about employer expectations, CV preparation, and how to stand out in job applications. Melissa offered practical advice to help them prepare for their next steps and encouraged them to consider the diverse range of opportunities within the construction industry.
In addition, we recently visited the Southwark Skills Centre to support participants on their Green Skills Bootcamp for Construction. This programme is designed to equip local adults with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed for sustainable construction careers. Timothy from our Social Value team delivered an inspiring career talk, highlighting the breadth of roles available — from traditional site positions to emerging opportunities in sustainability, retrofit, and social value.
The Green Skills Bootcamp is closely linked to our ongoing work at the Ledbury Estate development, and we are excited about the potential to offer participants work experience placements, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities with Higgins Partnerships in the coming weeks.
We are proud to play a role in inspiring and equipping the next generation of construction professionals.
