T-Levels: Shaping the Future of Construction Through Skilled Young Talent

Posted 12/02/2025

As the construction industry continues to address the growing demand for skilled workers, T-Levels are proving to be a vital pathway for young talent to gain hands-on experience and kick-start their careers. These two-year qualifications, which combine classroom learning with substantial industry placements, are equipping students with the practical skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the sector.

One such success story is Ryan, who joined the Higgins Management Trainee Programme in September 2024 after completing his T-Level in Design, Surveying, and Planning for Construction. His industry placement took place on Higgins’ Botanical Place development in Surrey, where he gained invaluable on-site experience that helped shape his career aspirations.

Reflecting on his journey, Ryan shared: "After finishing my GCSEs, I decided not to pursue A-Levels and instead got my CSCS card to work on-site for a year. I then heard about the new T-Levels, so I enrolled in the two-year course in Design, Surveying, and Planning for Construction. As part of my course, Higgins offered me work experience two days a week on their West Byfleet development, which I really enjoyed.”

Ryan further highlighted the impact of his placement: “Working on site with Higgins was a positive experience, and it expanded my knowledge and inspired me to push for my future goals. Gaining hands-on site experience clarified the career path I wanted to take, and I enjoyed having access to the site plans to understand the documents involved in the design phases of a building.”

During his time on site, Ryan learned about the Management Trainee Programme, applied, and successfully secured a place.

"My first few months have been a fantastic learning experience on the Ledbury Estate development. From booking deliveries to attending meetings with the site manager and ensuring the site operations run smoothly, I’ve gained real insight into the industry.”

T-Levels are bridging the gap between education and employment, ensuring that young people like Ryan can seamlessly transition into the construction industry with the confidence and expertise needed to thrive. Higgins remains committed to investing in the next generation of construction professionals and looks forward to supporting more T-Level students in their career journeys.
