Higgins Group has welcomed its largest-ever intake of Management Trainees, with seven new recruits joining the business this week to begin their degree apprenticeships and careers in the construction industry.
The latest intake builds on the success of Higgins’ long-running Management Trainee Programme, which has supported young people into construction careers for many years, with previous trainees going on to take up senior roles across the business.
The programme allows participants to combine a fully-funded industry-accredited construction-related BSc (Hons) degree apprenticeship with hands-on experience across the business, allowing them to earn while they learn and gain valuable experience on live projects.
The continued growth in the programme also reflects the increasing appeal of degree apprenticeships, which offer young people the opportunity to gain a university qualification, develop practical skills and start building their careers without taking on student debt.
Dominic Higgins, Chief Operating Officer at Higgins Group, said, “We’re delighted to welcome our largest-ever intake of Management Trainees to Higgins. It's fantastic to see the programme continuing to grow and attracting talented young people who want to build a career in construction while gaining a degree.
“Apprenticeships have played an important role in developing our own people, including many who have gone on to senior positions within the business. By investing in the next generation from the start of their careers, we’re not only giving young people an opportunity to learn and progress, but also helping to develop the skills and future leaders our industry needs.”
The new trainees will spend the first 15 months of the five-year degree programme rotating through four core departments, gaining an understanding of the different disciplines involved in delivering projects. They will then choose an area in which to specialise, allowing them to focus their skills and experience as they progress through the programme.
Alongside their work within Higgins, the trainees will attend university one day a week during term time as they work towards their degree. The remaining four days are spent gaining practical experience within the business, allowing them to apply their academic learning to real-world projects.
Each trainee is also paired with a senior member of staff through Higgins’ structured mentoring scheme, providing support with both their professional and academic studies. They will also become part of the Higgins Management Trainee Network, which brings trainees together regularly to share experiences, build relationships, and gain wider understanding to the business.
The programme is fully funded by Higgins, with trainees receiving a competitive salary, annual performance-based pay reviews and pension enrolment. Following the successful completion of the programme, trainees will have the opportunity to progress into permanent roles within the business.
