Gabriel Square, St Albans

A Residential Development for Meyer Bergman comprising 80 residential houses and apartments in St Albans, Hertfordshire. The development includes a raised central courtyard, with parking below and a public square and garden above. The houses and apartments are arranged in four long terraces around the square, with two smaller blocks on London Road and Alma Road. The typology includes 52 town houses (three to five bedrooms), 16 maisonettes (two to three bedrooms) and 12 apartments (one to three bedrooms).

Built on the former Evershed’s print works, the site was a challenge from the start with the existing site being bowl shape. The development was designed by Michael Aukett Architects with Stace acting as Employer’s Agent. The development was designed to complement St Albans existing architecture at the same time as adopting a minimalist perspective and includes traditional materials such as natural French limestone adding a sense of lineage to the contemporary form.

Throughout the project, we worked closely with local schools and colleges to promote the construction industry and provide career advice and mentoring as well as employing three management trainees and three apprentices on site. We also created a viewing platform for the neighbouring nursery to allow the children to watch the work and see the development come to life.

The development is award winning and received the following accolades: Silver award at the What House Awards for Best House, 2017 British Homes Awards (The Sunday Times), Winner: Home of the Year (in a multi-Unit Scheme), 2017 Considerate Constructors Scheme’s National Site Awards, Awarded Silver for the Gabriel Square site.

Antony Crovella Sales and Marketing Director for Meyer Homes said: “Meyer Homes are delighted with the now complete Gabriel Square. It has changed the St Albans new homes landscape and has proved extremely popular with buyers.”
