Mayor marks ‘Topping Out’ of 77 affordable homes next to Greenway

This week the Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, visited the borough’s latest affordable housing development, designed for those on Newham’s housing waiting list, to lay its commemorative final brick.

The development will provide 77 new one, two and three bedroom homes in two new mansion blocks. The two buildings surround a communal area and look out over the Greenway. The break between buildings and the simple, robust brick design allow it to compliment the area well.

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said: “In Newham we are committed to building affordable homes for local people. I was honoured to mark the key stage to help us deliver this at Grange Road. The 77 new affordable homes will be available for local people early next year, helping to reach the promise I made to start the build of 1,000 new council-owned homes by March 2022.”

The new affordable homes will be let at ‘London Affordable Rents’ and will only be available to those on the Newham Council’s housing waiting list in accordance with the Council’s nominations policy.

It is being built by Higgins Partnerships for Populo Living, Newham Council’s wholly owned housing company.

Phil Burrows, Construction Director for Higgins Partnerships said: “It is wonderful to have the Mayor of Newham mark this significant milestone in our construction of Grange Road which provides much needed homes for the local community. The Mayor also got the opportunity to meet five of our Newham apprentices who have been able to start their careers in construction on this site.”

Higgins Partnerships actively recruits apprentices and local labour around its projects and at Grange Road they are currently working with five Newham residents who are undertaking a mix of trade apprenticeships as well as higher level site office based opportunities. Higgins also supports the Newham Royal Docks Internship Scheme initiative offering local people the opportunity to work with organisations to gain valuable skills, experience and knowledge during a 12 month placement.

The development is due to be fully completed in early 2022.
