Higgins Partnerships has delivered a significant new housing development with 120 mixed-tenure homes off Barrow Hall Road in Great Wakering, Southend-on-Sea in partnership with Sanctuary Homes.

The development includes one- to four-bedroom homes across a range of tenures: 78 private sale, 10 shared ownership and 32 affordable rent supporting the local community’s housing needs.

It also incorporates a mix of green spaces, play areas and a new pedestrian and cycle route connecting Barrow Hall Road and Southend Road, enhancing commuter connectivity. Designed to complement the local character, the homes feature dark roofs with brick and occasional rendered walls, aligning with Rochford District Council’s Housing Design SPD (2007) and The Essex Design Guide.

A key feature of the development is its commitment to sustainability and biodiversity. Formal and informal landscaping has created distinct ‘character’ areas, including landscaped squares and a boulevard, while enhanced hedgerows form ecological corridors to support wildlife.

Steve Leakey, Managing Director of Higgins Partnerships comments, “We are proud to have worked in partnership with Sanctuary Homes to bring these much-needed new homes to the local community. Our collaboration with South Essex Training Academy has also provided over 40 training opportunities, furthering our commitment to social value. Six apprentices have also been able to start their careers as part of the development.”

The development was designed by Chaplin Farrant Architects and Richard Jackson provided the engineering expertise.
